The Right Fit for Each Student
Keeping students engaged is critical to driving successful educational outcomes. It is important to make sure each student has the appropriate level of academic rigor so they can reach their full potential. VLN offers five adjustable rigor levels to meet each student’s individual needs. For students that have specific IEPs, VLN offers a range of options that can be set individually for each student and updated as needed.
Academic
The Academic track offers students a curriculum designed to introduce key skills that will be vital in post-secondary educational environments. In addition to courses in the core content areas, the Academic track includes: physical education, health and wellness, foreign languages, senior project/graduation project, CTE courses and a wide variety of electives.
General Education
The General Education track mirrors the Academic track but eliminates essay questions from the required assignments for a less rigorous assessment strategy. This track is geared toward students who aren’t planning to follow a traditional college preparatory curriculum.
Foundations
The Foundations track provides a basic level of rigor for students who may have lower reading comprehension and math skills. The pace of the instruction for these courses is reduced, lessons include multimedia that aids reading comprehension, and the assessment strategy guides students to practice key concepts. Students’ knowledge is then demonstrated through mastery-based online quizzes and tests.
Credit Recovery
With VLN’s pre-test model, students complete a multiple-choice evaluation to assess their existing knowledge and determine if they have met a minimum proficiency to “test out” of each learning module based on a school specified percentage. If a deficiency is indicated, students will engage with targeted instructional videos and readings and then complete an assignment and assessment to demonstrate their improved understanding of the course content.
Computer Graded
The Computer Graded track provides a foundation of instruction and assessment for concept mastery. Students complete reading exercises and are presented with engaging and interactive lessons to support each concept. Students’ knowledge is then demonstrated through mastery-based, auto-graded quizzes and tests.
Honors
Honors courses provide a more rigorous and writing-intensive approach to the key skills and concepts that will be vital in post-secondary educational environments. These courses include more project-based assessments and more challenging and in-depth assessment as compared to Academic track courses.
Advanced Placement
Advanced Placement courses meet the rigorous standards of the College Board and are designed to prepare students to sit for the AP Exams.

Grades K-3: Elementary School Courses follow a specific assessment
As we monitor student progress and outcomes throughout the year, it may be necessary to adjust a student’s curriculum track and/or implement specific curriculum modifications depending on a student’s needs and goals. To facilitate that process, our special education teams, administrators, educators and practitioners, share expertise to provide effective instruction, accommodations, and implement specially designed instruction (SDI) for students who require an Individualized Education Program (IEP).
