Standards Aligned Instruction

All courses are developed and mapped to meet all state standards. As a result, each student experiences a rich, deep understanding of the material that is applicable to both local and state assessments.

Assessments Graded by Real Teachers

While some tasks are auto-graded within the learning management system, most grading is conducted by VLN’s highly qualified, state-certified teachers. This includes short answers, essays, and projects. Teachers are also able to leave audio comments on all assessments to provide additional context and personal encouragement. For school-supported programs, courses may be supported by teachers via the tools in VLN’s Virtual School Toolkit™.

VLN Curriculum Highlights

Advanced Placement

VLN’s Advanced Placement courses meet the rigorous standards of the College Board and are designed to prepare students for AP Exams. Our courses have been audited and authorized by the College Board and utilize a college-level, writing-intensive structure. These courses are a great way for students to experience a college-level course in their last years of high school.

Honors

Honors courses provide a more rigorous and writing-intensive approach to the key skills and concepts that will be vital in post-secondary educational environments. These courses include more project-based assessments and more challenging and in-depth assessment as compared to Academic track courses.

World Languages

VLN Education offers 18 world language courses including French, German, Latin, Spanish, Japanese, and Mandarin Chinese. In addition, VLN offers an Invitation to Languages course that introduces students to five major world languages. All world language courses are taught by state-certified teachers fluent in the language taught. Students experience the language virtually using speaking and listening exercises designed to give them the opportunity to practice listening to spoken language as well as speaking the language aloud. Students receive feedback on delivery and pronunciation from fluent grading teachers.

English Language Learner (ELL) Courses

VLN’s English Language Learner courses are aligned to WIDA standards and are designed to support ELL students as a complement to their current academic coursework. Our engaging, interactive content helps to bridge the gaps related to the five standards-based content areas: language arts, math, science, social studies, and conversational language. Our course content focuses on five levels of language proficiency and includes a variety of resources to assist the student and a learning coach as they navigate through the program.

NCAA Approved Courses

VLN Partners is proud to offer over 100 NCAA approved courses designed to benefit students pursuing athletic endeavors as part of their educational experience. VLN’s NCAA courses meet all NCAA academic standards. See our course catalog for a complete NCAA course listing.

Assessments

Rigorous assessment and performance tracking is provided for all students through the courses in our learning management system. All courses contain a consistent, well-balanced framework of assignments and assessments designed to give teachers direct insight into students’ understanding of content. Students are required to show their work and provide explanation in their responses to further demonstrate mastery. All courses are structured with a weekly module format and include:

Assignments
Correspond with the assigned textbook reading for each module and provide students with an opportunity to apply the concepts from their lesson.

Short Answers
Require students to provide thorough responses that validate understanding of key concepts.

Essays
Ask students to apply higher-level thinking to answer a complex topic-relevant question while also developing strong writing skills.

Quizzes And Tests
Enable students to demonstrate mastery of content through multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank assessments.

Projects
Included in the courses, where relevant, and require students to research, plan and organize, as well as to adhere to formats and demonstrate writing capabilities.

Course Duration

VLN’s courses are delivered in weekly segments called Modules (MODs). This presents students with the desired balance of structure and flexibility that is critical in online learning. Weekly MODs also enable students’ progress to be measured through a variety of visual gauges and reports to easily identify whether or not a student is “on pace.” Course duration is traditionally based on a 36-week schedule, but may also be delivered in a block format (completing a 1.0 credit course in one semester). Additionally, full-year/1.0 credit courses in grades 6 through 12 are available in semester-based segments.
